Ask HN: Recommendations for consumer home security systems?
2 points by shostack on Feb 19, 2016 | hide | past | favorite
The post on SimpliSafe today reminded me that I need to do more home security research to find a system/service.

It seems like most of the consumer offerings out there are overpriced and customers have very poor experiences with the likes of ADT, etc.

I don't have time to mess around with installing it myself or hacking together some homebrew system, nor am I able to pay a fortune for a top-end system or a high monthly fee. Does something even exist with those criteria? I feel home security should be something accessible to all, but all I see are unreliable products with expensive monthly fees on multi-year contracts (which I don't want to commit to in case I move).

I realize I'm looking for a solution that does everything for not a ton of money and that may not exist, but I'd love to know others' experiences in case I'm missing something obvious or need to adjust my expectations.

I'm in the Bay Area (Peninsula) FWIW.
