Let me be clear: the official Google Search statement you read is wrong.

A good structured data strategy will positively impact organic rankings.

Regarding jqp's conclusion: I hope he is wrong.

And I hoped Google wouldn't be evil.

But it should come as no real surprise that hope proved to be an ineffective antidote to greed.
