> But this isn’t unlike the general populous. At scale humans accept new things slowly.

right, the model works like humans at scale. Not like a human who reads the actual paper disproving the fact they thought was correct and is able to adapt. True not every human manages to do that, science advancing one death at a time, but some can.

But since the model is a statistical one, it works like humans at scale.

works if someone starts by reading the article first, but otherwise that strategy isn't any good either.

interesting, the woman who wrote the Nature obituary got hate mail for writing the obituary from someone who felt Gladys didn't deserve getting the recognition, evidently

on edit: the bluesky account histoftech seems to be run by the author of the Nature obituary Mar Hicks, at least they have the same pictures.

well, this should probably be more like a SHOW HN post, with a bit more technical details, but things I notice:

since it's a platform for non-lawyers to use, the text is too legal sounding, for example your topics

Commercial law - Business transactions and agreements.

Criminal law - Addressing crime and sentencing.

Employment law - Fairness for employers and employees.

Estate and probate law - Managing and distributing assets.

Family law - Separation, divorce, and settlements.

Immigration law - Visas, residency, and sponsorships.

Litigation - Matters involving the courts.

Some of those are things your target clientele might not understand (maybe I am underestimating the intelligence of the U.S general public here, which I believe is your intended audience, but I've heard you'll never go broke doing that)

I might want it like

Commercial Law = I need to make a contract!

Employment law = two categories, I am an employee. What are my rights? and I am a business owner. What are my rights? And that second one I might put into parts merge in bits of commercial law.

and so forth, someone might read probate law? That's me I'm going on probation!!

Things I might expect, you don't get lots of criminal law customers.

From having worked at Thomson Reuters, once you have the tech in place to gather and organize this data the money making is in segmentation. Yeah, this is how you might organize things if you were making a site for Lawyers, but I sort of feel it is wrongly structured for a site for non-lawyers. Hopefully you are getting data on usage patterns to think of restructuring as I think you could maybe build something more intuitive solutions for potential lawyer customers.

I also hate chat based UI, so that may explain some negative feelings here.

from the code doesn't look like they do anything if they have a match, they just save all the results to a csv for fingerprinting?

"The code" here you're referring to (fetch_extension_names.js[1]) isn't and doesn't claim to be LinkedIn's fingerprinting code. It's a scraper that the researcher behind this repo wrote themselves in order to create the CSV of the data that they're publishing here.

LinkedIn's fingerprinting code, as the README explains, is found in fingerprint.js[2], which embeds a big JSON literal with the IDs of the extensions it probes for. (Sickeningly enough, this data starts about two-thirds of the way through the file* and isn't the culprit behind the bulk of its 2.15 MB size…)

* On line 34394; the one starting:

    const r = [{
                id: "aacbpggdjcblgnmgjgpkpddliddineni",
                file: "sidebar.html"

thanks, my fault for not reading the read me and just doing a quick read of the code.

my only complaint has always been that the contrast between screen color and text color is worse than in other eInk devices and as a consequence need to either wear reading glasses which I tend not to like over time, or use it in direct light, which drastically decreases the utility.

Often when I say this on HN I get told reading is not the purpose of the device, which is really strange since it is one of the mentioned purposes of the device on their site, and also because I just generally find people who don't read what they're writing, or read the text they are making notes in, to be strange people.

on edit: Of course mine is from a few years ago, and have not purchased another for the reasons given above, but have looked at it in the store and it didn't seem to be improved, and obviously it is not the Pro Move under discussion here.

how much of your time do these visits take up, can you document it and then sue Facebook in small claims court for your time and effort? This seems a stretch but maybe it could be made to work, it could be amusing if so.

I mean this is essentially the same situation anyone is in when they have vendor lock in, they know it's a problem, but it is always just not worth it to get out, only this vendor lock in is all vendors from a country lock in and now it is not just worth it but imperative, absolutely necessary.

And of course once you have gotten out of vendor lock in, you never go back. If you do go back to that vendor that locked you in before, because of some sweetheart deal, you make sure to set up all sorts of escape hatches so if you need to bounce quickly you can.

The vendor lock in of the EU to the US for so many things is being dismantled.
